Hello, welcome to our very first blog post.

I’m so excited to start sharing with you more about what goes on behind the scenes, the inspiration, our brand values and ethics, what we stand for and believe in, and basically everything that all comes together to create Caja.

I’m going to dive right in and start with a topic that I’ve been passionate about right from the get go, the importance of creating an ethical and sustainable jewellery label. As a designer, creator and business owner, I feel a certain sense of responsibility to educate our community on the impact of fast fashion and what it really means to be a conscious consumer.

WHAT ACTUALLY IS FAST FASHION?

Fast fashion - Inexpensive fashion items produced rapidly by mass-market retailers in response to the latest trends.

The majority of these items are manufactured in large quantities and at extremely low costs. Many of the manufacturing factories have poor working conditions and the employees are often paid an unfair salary. Over the last 20 years production costs in developing countries have become even lower, the items are so cheap and such low quality that they are practically disposable. They are made to be worn a handful of times before falling apart, being thrown out, or discarded as it is no longer ‘on trend’ for that season. They then end up in landfill, clogging and polluting our Earth.

We live in a modern society of mass over consumption, the average wardrobe nowadays compared to our grandmothers is ridiculous. It time to realise that less really is more. Choose pieces that will last and make you feel good, and I mean not just feel good on the outside but feel good knowing that your item comes from a responsible and sustainable slow fashion company.

Our Earth is precious, we only have one. As a consumer we have the choice to take responsibility for our purchases by being mindful every time we take out our purse. Just like we are becoming mindful of using less plastics, eating less meat, bringing our pretty reusable coffee cups with us everywhere we go, we also need to be mindful of our fashion. What you choose to wear on your body should cost more than a few dollars, and at the end of the day you get what you pay for. Save your pennies in the long run by investing in timeless pieces that are high quality, consciously created and made to last. Support small businesses and designers and don’t fall victim to chasing the latest fashion trends.

I am so proud to be partnered with an incredible jewellery manufacturing team based in the heart of beautiful Bali. They have amazingly high standards of workplace welfare, company values and transparency. They continue to exceed my expectations, and believe me when I say that my expected standards are sky high. I am going to write a dedicated blog post on my manufacturers so you can get to know them better, learn more about their beautiful culture and see the art of their skilled handicraft.

You will be pleased to know that our jewellery comes packaged to you in paper based recyclable gift boxes and plant based compostable mailer bags. Currently 80% of our silver comes from recycled sources such as old jewellery and parts. I’m working on more ways to be more sustainable, but if you have any ideas or suggestions please leave a comment as I would love to know.

If you’ve made it this far you should give yourself a pat on the back, because it means you care about our beloved Earth and that makes you a wonderful human. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my first post.

Love Zoë
